they probably load "dirty" cargo and perhaps in bulk too, then experiencing continious damages in the topsides.
Both red oxide and black colours will minimise the cosmetic appearance to some regard and they therefore may have painted the mid section in these colours.
Just a thought.
Onassis, in the 1960's changed the white topsides of his ships especially tankers into black in order to obscure the rust.
