Default Cap San Diego

The "Cap San Diego" used to be trading for Hamburg.Süd. She found her final berth at the Überseebrücke at Hamburg, leaving from time to time to participate at events like Kieler Woche or Hamburger Hafengeburtstag. She`s being used as Hotelship too, but have been told that one has to book 2 years in advance....

CAP SAN DIEGO on the 16th May 2009 River Weser
Photos:Frits Olinga-Delfzijl

The Cap San Diego, built in 1961, is a unique testimony to seafaring and is berthed in her old home harbour of Hamburg as a »museum you can touch« since 1986.
She is the last of the classic cargo ships, referred to as the “White Swan of the South Atlantic.”
Open daily from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
There are rooms to let and cabins to rent.
A round tour onboard the Cap San Diego leads the visitor to: cargo holds, loading gear, mooring and anchoring equipment, palaver deck, lifeboats, swimming pool and arbour, bridge, chart room and communications room, captain’s cabin, dining room and passenger cabins, galley, pantry and mess crew accommodations and the engine room.
An English Booklet containing a tour of the Ship is available for you during the duration of your stay on board.
The Book.
The story of the Cap San Diego is a symbol of the great port city of Hamburg. The book tells the full story behind the rescue and restoration of a Hamburg monument of international standing. The Cap San Diego is the last vessel of her kind and bears living witness to German engeneering process in shipbuilding. The “White Swan of the South Atlantic” is the only seaworthy museum freighter in the world.
